Saint Patrick Regional

Congratulations to our 2012 Regional Place-Winners!

So. Danny Freitag (113) 2nd Place
Danny wrestled tough, picking up a big win against St. Pats' Jalen Reyes in the semi-final round before falling to Nate Smith of Austin. Smith, who entered the day 22-1 after placing 3rd at the Chicago Public League Tournament, was put to the test by Freitag in only his 10th match of the season.

Danny will be looking to breakthrough at the coming sectionals and make the trip to Champagne. He will wrestle Michael Roman of Amundsen (CPL) in the opening round next week at Grayslake. Roman took 4th in the CPL Tournament, falling to Smith in 2:28.

Congratulations Danny

Sr. Matt Garelli (120) Champion - Matt dominated the field in this tournament, with a bye, and :18 fall against Brandley Green of Marshall, and a 2:28 fall against Marcos Torres of St. Pats.

Matt will be a #1 seed at sectionals, and will first face the winner of Levi Smith Fr. Lakes Community (30-11) and Mike Ferri Fr. Niles Notre Dame (4 -1). Matt has been around long enough to know the need to take things one match at a time, but a potential match-up against  ILMatmen #3 ranked Cameron Kennedy of Richmond-Burton is no doubt on the radar.

Keep making us proud Matt

Sr. Anthony Aguilar (126) 2nd Place - Tony is another Friar who has had a shortened season, but is coming into his own as we speak. In the semi-final round Tony toed the line with St. Pats' HM Dom Boggia. These two have meet up many times in the past, going back to Frosh/Soph state and the IKWF days. Tony disappointed the crowd, which was anticipating a great match. With a quick takedown in the opening seconds of the bout, Tony was winner by fall in 1:10. Tony dropped the championship bout to Mike DiFrisco of Elmwood Park HS 8-1.

At Grayslake Tony will face Stewart Montgomery Sr. Woodstock (16-20) in the opening round. Montgomery DNP at the Fox Valley Conference Tournament.

So. Mike Kozyra (145) Champion

Kozyra stared the day on the right foot with a 15-0 techfall over Marco DiPalo of St. Ignatius. In the semi-final round, Mike defeated D.J. Buendia of St. Pats with a fall in 2:41. This set up a thrilling finals match against Perdo Martinez of Clemente HS. Martinez entered the finals with a record of 31-0, and recently won the Chicago Public League Tournament at 152lbs. After a few scrambles and giving up back points, Mike found himself trailing 8-4. He fought his way back in the 2nd to go up 8-9. He did not hold the lead long, as Martinez again had a 4 pt lead with Mike on his back late in the third. Mike however had to decided to "burn the ship" when he arrived at the gym. He fought off his back, rolled through, and put Martinez on his back to win by fall in 5:13.

Next week at Grayslake, Mike with face the winner of Dylan Hay Sr. Grayslake Central (32-7) and
Elliot Hilgert Sr. St. Viator (26-11) in the opening round.

Jr. Dubem Ikedeonwu (160) 2nd PlaceDubem is another first year wrestler in our program who has grown by leaps and bounds. Dubem was a winner by a score of 7-0 over Marcus Morris of Westinghouse in the semis before dropping a tough 8-4 decision to Mike Kornafel of St. Pats in the finals. Next week at Grayslake, Dubem will face Chris Wollmuth, a  Sr. at Grayslake Central (15-10)

Sr. Graham Joss (160) Champion - Graham controlled each of his matches today, and looked like a champion doing it. He improved his record on the year to 18-8 with a fall over Otis Johnson of Austin (1:07) in the semis, and then recoding a 9-2 decision over Larry Juliano of St. Pats in the finals. Next week at Sectionals, Graham will face either David Gregory, a Jr. from Lakes Community (27-12) or Robert Hill, a So. from Niles Notre Dame (7 - 6)
