ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy senior wrestling standout Bobby Barnhisel (River Forest, Ill.) has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week Presented by Rolls-Royce following his fourth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. It is the second time in the last three weeks Barnhisel has earned the honor.
Barnhisel extended his winning streak to 14 consecutive wins by opening the 31st-annual tournament with a 3-0 win over Arizona State's Corey Combs. The Navy senior, however, suffered his first setback of the season in the second round, dropping a 6-4 decision to Academy rival Gabe Martinez of Air Force.
Barnhisel fought his way back through the consolation bracket by outscoring his opponents 69-3 (19-2, 17-0, 15-0, 12-1, 6-0). Along the way, he shut out 10th-ranked Josh Demas of Ohio State, 15-0, and avenged his earlier loss to Martinez by handling the Falcon a 6-0.
Boasting a 19-2 record, he has already racked up more victories than any other season at the Academy and has won three individual crowns - Eastern Michigan Open, Roadrunner Open, Navy Classic - this season.
