Things Looking Up At Hinsdale South

Fenwick Wrestling is starting to pick up a small amount of attention from the rest of the wrestling community. With a strong showing at this past weekend's Hinsdale South Tournament, the Friars are seeing that their hard work is paying off. The following has been taken from an article published on illinoismatmen.com

One week after winning an individual tournament title at Conant, Fenwick’s Mike Kozyra earned another with a pin of the Mustang’s Lee. Lee won a scramble at the edge for a takedown and back points to start the match, but Kozyra rolled through and won his own scramble to win by fall just 55 seconds into the match.

With two tournament wins under his belt, the junior Kozrya isn’t likely to fly under anyone’s radar for much longer.

“I’m a lot more in control this year than I was last year,” Kozyra said. “I was a head case last year and I’m a lot more focused now. I’d see a ranked kid last year and I wouldn’t even try to wrestle against him. This year, I don’t care where anyone is ranked.”

The Friars are proud of Kozyra, but there is much more to the team than one man. Senior's Tony Triggiano and Dubem Ikedeonwu are helping set the bar high for a team full of underclassmen. Triggiano took 5th going 4-1 on the day. Ikedeonwu captured third. Freshmen Al Aguilar also wrestled to a 4-1 record on the day taking 5th.

The Friars are set to compete at the Pospect Tournament this weekend, where they will again see some top competition. One of the key matchups people are looking forward to is an anticipated rematch between our Mike Kozyra and Br. Rice's Nuntrae Jackson. Jackson is currently ranked #3 by illinoismatmen in AAA. Kozyra has now moved his ranking up to #7 in AA. The two met last year with Jackson taking a decision in the semifinals of the CCL tournament.
