Earlier today, the Friars traveled to Br. Rice High School to participate in the Chicago Catholic League Tournament. The team traveled without a 106, 132, 145, 195, and 220. Considering the Friars only entered roughly 64% of a team, a fifth place team finish is great accomplishment.
The team title went to the Mt. Carmel Caravan, who edged the St. Rita Mustangs by a team score of 246 to 223. The Lawless Award for outstanding senior went to Mt. Carmel's David Denne, while the Lawless award for outstanding coach went to Caravan leader Kading. Rounding out the trifecta, the tournament OW went to nationally ranked Caravan Jr. Brice Brill.
The Friars placed three at third place; Jr. Emerson Harris, Jr. Mike Kozyra, and Sr. Dubem Ikedeonwu. Harris won a tremendous match by hitting a switch for a two pt. reversal in the final 20 seconds of the match. Kozyra was winner by fall over Worker from Mt. Carmel. Kozy gave up a takedown in the opening seconds of the match, but from there it was all Fenwick. Ikedeonwu won another gutsy match over Loyola. After hurting his shoulder in the semifinal wrestle-backs, he was visibly hurt during his medal match. With a display of guts and tenacity that would make any of the long list of former Friar wreslters proud, Ikedeonwu toughed it out and brought home the bronze.
The final match-ups were as follows:
