Frosh Gordon Tech Invite

A tri with Brother Rice was cancelled this weekend but that didn't stop the Fenwick Wrestling Team from competing! This time it was the freshman who would represent The Shield as they traveled to Addison and California to compete in the GT Ram Fresman Invitational. The team entered the gym missing many wrestlers, and having many wrestling up a weight class giving up significant pounds to their opponents. However these Friars have been staring down challenges all year, and went out and wrestled, regardless of the circumstances!

98lbs - Liam White was giving up 10 pounds in order to contribute, and continued to show off his talent. White placed 5th win a pin against Lane Tech in the medal round.
113lbs - Steven Barshop has been filling in on Varsity, and has been finding success. He entered GT with high expectations, and lived up to all of them. Pinning his way through opponents from OPRF, Joliet West, and Warren, Barshop earned a bracket board and a gold medal.

120 - Louis Nardello showed promise scoring a quick first period takedown, but ultimately dropped his preliminary round match and was knocked out of the event.

126 - Danny Breslin weighed in 7 pounds light, and despite improved neutral wrestling, was 0-2 and did not place.

138 - Sean McGee has shown a great deal of promise this season. McGee did not place despite going 2-2 on the day after losing in the medal round to St. Rita. No doubt there will be a rematch in the future.

145 - Jackson Haeflinger weighed in 7 pounds shy of the limit, but this did not stop him from being the aggressor on the day. Haeflinger went 0-2 and did not place despite scoring the all important first takedown in both his matches.

145 - Connor Foley entered the tournament unattached and dropped a preliminary round match and was eliminated.

152 - Robert Grayson weighed in 9 pounds under, and lost a quarterfinal march to the eventual champion (Cotton, OPRF). Grayson bounced back to win his next two matches to capture 5th place.

152 - Esteban Kurth entered unattached and was 0-2 on the day and did not place.

160 - Jon Kulhanek weighed in 11 pounds under today and list to the enen till champion from Warren in the preliminary round. The weight disparity has not bother Kulhanek all year who said, "I like going 160. It's harder, and will only make me better." Kulhanek wrestled back to take 7th place with a pin in the medal round.

170 - Nick Hayden has dropped down from 182 and has been wrestling very well. At GT Hayden did not place despite wrestling hard and picking up another win to add to his season totals.

182 - Alex Burke made his 182 debut after dropping from 195. The move brought with it success as Burke finished 3rd on the day after scoring a big fall against conference foe Loyola.

Coaches Tony Poro and Alex Holmburg had the boys prepared to win. The two have trained these freshman Friars to understand the value of competing. "Our guys are showing that they are not afraid of adversity, and are learning to believe in themselves," Holmburg said. Poro agreed, adding "They are buying into our program, and continue to make everyone around them proud."
