The varsity and lower levels wasted no time getting back in the swing of things after Christmas and New Years Day. Thursday the 2nd, the Frosh/Soph Team braved the snow and icy roads traveling to New Lenox to compete in the Providence Catholic Sophomore Tournament. The team was lead by Sophomore Kevin Latz who placed second at 138lbs.
Friday the 3rd, all levels traveled to De La Salle for a tri with Nazareth academy. First up was De La Salle vs. Fenwick. Both varsity and the frosh/soph teams competed in extremely close duals that were decided by one match. The frosh/soph were lead to a 33-30 victory by sophomore Kevin Latz and freshman Sean McGee, who both secured pins. McGee was involved in a back and forth match and was trailing by a point with 1 minute to go. From the bottom he was able to get a reversal and pin, which ultimately decided the dual.
The varsity dual was just as close, however the end result went in the favor of the Comets. The action was started off by senior Emerson Harris, who was able to get bonus points with a major decision. Harris has hit his stride in recent weeks, and is determined to make it down state. After hitting the halfway point of the season, Harris said he will have to train even harder in order to peak in February. Sophomore Al Aguilar wrestled Robert Zebrauskas, who is ranked #12 at 126lbs, and gave him all he could handle despite losing 5-3. Aguilar has been a bit under the radar in the wrestling community, but those in the know are aware of the talent this young man possesses. Aguilar would have likely qualified for state last year as a freshman if not for a late season injury. Now wrestling at 120lbs, Aguilar is ready to make a splash at CCLs, regionals, sectionals, and state. The marquee matchup of the day was Fenwick's Mike Kozyra (#3 at 170) against Collin Farley (#5 at 170). The two met last season with Kozyra dominating in a lopsided match. This season however the match was much closer. With the score tied at zero after the first period, Kozyra chose down and got an escape to score the all important first points of the match. He then added a takedown to close out the period. In the third, Farely chose down but Kozyra's riding ability proved too much for the Comet. The final score was 3-0, with Kozyra the winner.
Next up was Nazareth, who proved no match for the Friars on any level. The varsity won a competitive dual, while the frosh/soph team won a blowout dual with a score of 42-8.
Next up the freshman will travel to Niles West High School on Saturday for a team dual tournament, while the varsity have their turn to drive to south to take on Providence, Joliet West and Plainfield North.
