Friars 2 - 1 Heading Into First Weekend Of Competition

Through the first three duals of the season, the Friars have been in three very different positions: Outgunned against St. Rita, dominant against St. Joe's, and in a down to the wire dual against Guerin Prep.

Tuesday the Friars headed to the south side to open up the season and CCL competition against perennial state power St. Rita. Things kicked off with Dominic Daley at 120 and ended with Chris Hawthrone at HWT. Notable matches were Adam Aguilar at 126 vs (#5 3A) Jake Silzer and Steven Barshop at 138 vs (#1 3A) Austin O'Conner. Both these Friars wrestled well despite losing by tech fall and fall, respectively. This experience will pay dividends for them boys in the Spring. The Friars lone win on the night came with a :14 fall by Chris Hawthrone. This pin puts Hawthorne in the Fenwick record books for Quickest pin, ranking as the 7th fastest pin in team history.

Wednesday, the Friars spent the day loading up the school bus and delivering food to the OPRF Food Pantry. In all, over 2,500 pounds of food was donated! Later that night, they hosted the annual home Thanksgiving dual in the Lawless Gymnasium. This year, the team welcomed in the Guerin Gators and the St. Joe's Chargers. First up were the Chargers, who were proved no match for the Friars. The dual saw two sophomores make their varsity debut in only their second career matches. Adrian Nourse wrestled extremely well despite a one point loss. Thomas Ruiz secured a first period pin to springboard the Friars to victory. Despite the lopsided score, the Chargers are in good hands with first year head coach Joe Manzello, who is also the general manager at Final Round Combat Sports Academy in Hillside.

The night ended with a nail-biter with Guerin Prep. The dual was full of falls with each team team notching six a piece. The final score was 36-36 with the Friars winning on criteria. The lower levels completed a sweep of the night by winning all but two matches.

Next up the Friars head north to Belmont Ave. and compete in the 11th annual Gator Invite on Saturday. Wrestling should begin at 9:00am, come out and support your Friars!
